The walk starts from outside the entrance to Marple railway station at 11am. The 1018 train from Manchester Piccadilly arrives in Marple at 1042, free if you have the valid pass. The 383 bus from Stockport runs every 30 minutes and stops outside the station, journey time 30 minutes. Parking is available (free) at Marple station, post code SK6 7DA, or if the car park is full immediately opposite the station in the overflow car park next to the Purple Pakora restaurant. If you are driving please note that the Young Farmers Country Fair and the Hydro open day are both on Sunday 27th July, both events are close to Dobbies garden centre and traffic in the area is likely to be congested.
The walk takes us from the station and up to the Peak Forest canal. We will walk down the towpath to the Aqueduct and along towards Romiley before dropping down through the woods to the Chadkirk estate. The chapel opens at 12 noon for visitors and refreshments will be on sale (CASH ONLY), also there are limited toilet facilities. When we leave the chapel we will walk up the hill to the well dressing, the theme for this year is the Women’s Land Army, celebrating 80 years since the end of WWII. After we leave the well we carry on uphill back to the canal where we join the towpath for a short walk to the Spread Eagle pub for lunch, the pub will probably require a non refundable deposit. After lunch we return along the canal, after passing over the aqueduct again we walk down to the river and follow the riverside path around to Marple Bridge and the railway station.
The total walking distance is around 4.5 miles. The paths are all pretty good but there may be muddy areas after rain. Its Marple, there are hills both up and down, but none particularly demanding!
